The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) was founded in 1898. Since then, it has grown to connect professionals from across Canada’s mining and energy industries and now boasts a massive membership of over 14,600 individuals. The organization is internationally respected as it strives to educate, innovate and exchange knowledge and ideas within the energy industry.

CIM hosted its first convention in 1899 in Montreal, and each year becomes bigger and better for attendees. This year’s convention promises specialized workshops, informative seminars and a trade show featuring 450 confirmed exhibits.

Who will be in attendance?

The 2017 CIM Convention will bring together professionals from Canada’s energy industry who will participate in workshops, seminars, networking events and the CIM Expo mining trade show.

First, the CIM Expo is where attendees can begin their self-directed networking campaign. The CIM Expo is a trade show for 450 companies showcasing their products and services. Attendees can expect mining companies with a focus on a range of minerals and metals; mining equipment developers and suppliers; geologists; consultants and manufacturers. The expo will run from April 30 through May 2. Full list of confirmed exhibits.

The technical program of the convention runs from May 1 through May 3, and includes presentations on safety practices, operational development, geology and exploration, underground mining, maintenance and engineering, sustainability development and innovation. Some specific discussion topics to look for under the umbrella of safety are the impact of technology on safety practices, health and safety challenges, and the implementation of safety improvements. More presentations will be confirmed over the weeks leading up to the event.

The 2017 CIM convention also features specialized workshops organized by industry experts. This year’s workshops include Mining 101, Best Practices in Water Treatment, The Electric Mine, and Mineral Resource Estimation.

As for networking and entertainment, a must-attend event is the awards gala. The CIM awards gala on Monday, May 1, is a celebration for the leaders of the Canadian mining industry. Registration for the gala includes the promise of entertainment for the evening as well as dinner.

Lastly, all convention attendees should find a spot at the plenary session. The theme of this year's plenary session is A New State of Mine. Speaker Carol Plummer will moderate the discussion on Monday, May 1.

Why should I attend?

The convention and expo provides a great place for students, industry workers, leaders, and those in related fields to learn about new products and services. The event is a platform to gain industry knowledge, meet industry experts and share ideas. It is a meeting place to discuss innovative ideas with industry professionals. It is a chance to emerge yourself in a community of energy experts.

How can I get the most out of the CIM convention?

There’s no way that one person could attend every workshop, seminar or event at the CIM convention. The best way to experience CIM is through careful pre-planning. What are your must-sees? Who do you hope to meet and greet? Research the presenters and make note of your favourites. Pre-purchase tickets whenever possible to reserve your space. With an event of this depth, a plan is necessary to make the most of your attendance. While CIM offers convention benefits to CIM members, non-members are more than welcome to attend.
