Karina Brino: MABC President and CEO named a WXN 2016 Top 100 Canada’s Most Powerful Women

In November of 2016, The Mining Association of B.C. announced that Karina Briño, President and CEO, has been named a Women's Executive Network (WXN) 2016 Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award Winner.
Launched in 2003, the Top 100 Awards celebrate the incredible accomplishments of Canada’s top female executive talent as well as their organizations and networks. Karina, who will receive the RBC Champions award for making a distinct difference to the advancement of women in the Canadian workforce, was honoured during a gala celebration at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on November 24.
Karina joined MABC as President and CEO in 2011 and was the first woman to hold this post since the Association’s inception in 1901. The B.C. mining industry is a proud supporter of women and minorities in leadership and has dedicated significant effort to increasing their representation in the mining workforce. The Association is actively working with the Centre of Training Excellence in Mining on the recruitment of women in the sector and has made important contributions in the development of innovative training programs aimed at increasing the participation of First Nations and youth-at-risk in the mining industry.
The Mining Association of B.C. would also like to congratulate Charlene Ripley, Executive Vice President General Counsel for Goldcorp Inc. on also being selected as a WXN 2016 Top 100. The B.C. mining industry continues to be a foundational component of economic development and job growth in the province. Earlier this year Business in Vancouver recognized the important role of the mining sector when awarding both Karina and Marcia Smith, Teck’s Senior Vice-President of Sustainability and External Affairs, top honours at the Influential Women in Business Awards. Smith also made WXN’s Most Powerful Women Top 100 list in 2015. These recognitions highlight the important role the B.C. mining industry continues play in the economy and workforce development.

The Top 100 Awards serve to recognize talented leaders in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors and to inspire the current and next generation to push the boundaries of what’s possible. “Women are not just leading companies, headlines and new deals, we’re doing so in record numbers. In addition to closing the gender gap for participation in post-secondary education and the workforce, we’re excelling at the top levels of every sector,” says WXN Owner and CEO, Sherri Stevens. “When WXN created Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Awards, part of the purpose was celebration. By recognizing a community of now 939 remarkable women, we get the opportunity to look back and appreciate the hard work and hurdle jumping it took to get here.”

Karina assumed the role of President and CEO of the MABC in August 2011, bringing with her a wealth of experience in the province’s mining sector. Prior to joining MABC, Karina was B.C.’s senior mining advisor, having been appointed Assistant Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Energy and Mines. Karina is an active member of the Vancouver business community with Board appointments at the Britannia Mine Museum and MOSAIC and is a former member of the Standards Council of Canada’s Advisory Committee on Social Responsibility. In 2012, Karina was presented a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of her contributions to Canada and in March 2016, she was awarded Business in Vancouver’s 2016 Influential Women in Business designation.
