2013 Mining and Sustainability Award Presentation Ceremony
Community celebration to present the 2013 B.C. Mining and Sustainability Award to Taseko-Gibraltar. The event will bring together provincial representatives, Mining Association of B.C. officials, Taseko employees, local suppliers, and community leaders to celebrate responsible mining achievements in the Cariboo region.
This community celebration represents a significant milestone in recognizing excellence in sustainable mining practices within British Columbia. The ceremony will honor Taseko's remarkable transformation of the Gibraltar Mine from a closed facility scheduled for demolition into Canada's second largest copper mine, demonstrating how strategic investment and commitment to sustainability can revitalize mining assets while creating substantial local employment.
Attendees will include a diverse cross-section of the mining community, from provincial government representatives and Mining Association of B.C. officials to Taseko employees who have been instrumental in the mine's success, local suppliers who support the operation, and community leaders who have witnessed the mine's positive impact on the Cariboo region. The event provides an opportunity for stakeholders to celebrate not just corporate achievement, but the broader community benefits that result from responsible mining practices.
The Williams Lake location is particularly significant as it places the celebration within the community that has been most directly impacted by Gibraltar Mine's success. With approximately 700 employees, the majority living in the Cariboo region, the mine serves as a crucial economic anchor for the area. The ceremony will highlight how Taseko's decade-long commitment to rebuilding and modernizing Gibraltar has created lasting benefits that extend well beyond the mine site itself.
This recognition event also serves as an important industry showcase, demonstrating to other mining companies the tangible benefits of integrating sustainability principles into operations. The award criteria encompass eight key areas including health and safety, community engagement, respect for indigenous peoples, environmental stewardship, and creating economic and social benefits for local communities, making this ceremony a celebration of comprehensive excellence in mining practices.
