Canadian International Student Mine Rescue Competition

Thursday, February 20, 2020 – February 21, 2020 Vancouver, British Columbia

Canada's first international student mine rescue competition bringing together mine engineering students from around the world to test their emergency response skills. The competition features five challenges simulating real-world mining emergency scenarios, with title sponsorship from Dräger Canada.

This groundbreaking competition represents a major advancement in Canadian mining safety education, establishing the first international platform for students to demonstrate mine rescue capabilities. Participants will face five comprehensive challenges that mirror the real-world responsibilities of professional mine rescue teams: underground obstacle and recovery operations, triage first aid procedures, firefighting techniques, Drager BG4 equipment testing, and comprehensive written examinations. The event is designed to replicate the high-pressure, technical environments that mine rescue personnel encounter when responding to emergencies at active mining operations. With support from the University of Alberta and Laurentian University, the competition aims to establish a new standard for hands-on safety training in mining engineering programs. Industry backing from Dräger Canada, a global leader in safety technology, demonstrates strong sector commitment to advancing emergency preparedness education. The competition is expected to inspire the development of student mine rescue teams across Canadian universities, potentially establishing an annual tradition that strengthens the country's mining safety culture and showcases Canadian expertise in mine rescue methodologies to the international mining community.
