Energy Disruptors: Unite 2018

Tuesday, May 1, 2018 May 2, 2018 Calgary, Alberta

Inaugural summit bringing together traditional oil and gas companies with energy transformation innovators. Featured Richard Branson as headliner and attracted 1,600 delegates to discuss energy sector disruption and collaboration opportunities.

Energy Disruptors Unite 2018 marked a pivotal moment for Calgary's energy sector, bringing together over 1,600 delegates, 60 business leaders, and 150 students for two intensive days of energy transformation discussions. The summit featured Virgin Group founder Richard Branson as the headline speaker, alongside other notable figures including Dave Mowat (former ATB Financial CEO), Peter Tertzakian (ARC Financial), and author Susan Cain. The event was designed to create meaningful dialogue between established petroleum companies and disruptive technology innovators.

The summit attracted major industry sponsors including ATB Financial as title sponsor and Royal Dutch Shell, representing crucial buy-in from both the financial and petroleum sectors. Shell's participation was particularly significant given their public commitments to energy transformation and investments beyond traditional oil and gas. The event deliberately avoided government funding to maintain political neutrality and was supported entirely through business sponsorship and delegate admissions.

Attendees represented a cross-section of the energy ecosystem, from traditional oil and gas executives to renewable energy entrepreneurs and technology innovators. The format emphasized networking and collaboration, with Edge noting anecdotal reports of startups forming from connections made at the summit and petroleum companies subsequently altering their technology strategies. The success was achieved with no traditional advertising, relying instead on word-of-mouth and social media promotion.

The inaugural event established Calgary as a potential hub for energy sector transformation discussions, challenging the city's traditional image as purely an oil and gas center. The summit's success has since generated international interest, with approaches for expansion to Europe, the United States, and Asia, while Calgary continues to serve as the home base for this growing energy transformation dialogue.
