Innovating Alberta's Energy Future Showcase

Wednesday, April 19, 2017 Jack Singer Concert Hall, Calgary, Alberta

A showcase event featuring diverse innovators and influencers sharing groundbreaking work to shape Alberta's energy future, including presentations on emissions reduction technologies, renewable energy initiatives, and CO2 conversion innovations. The event brings together oil and gas executives, First Nations leaders, entrepreneurs, and policy makers to explore collaborative pathways toward a low carbon energy system.

The Innovating Alberta's Energy Future Showcase represents a landmark gathering of Alberta's energy transition thought leaders, featuring presentations from the Energy Futures Lab Fellows who span industry, government, First Nations, civil society, and academia. The event showcases practical innovations including dramatic emissions reduction technologies in oil and gas production, renewable energy deployment in Indigenous communities, and cutting-edge CO2 conversion technologies from Carbon XPrize semi-finalists. Notable speakers include Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi delivering opening remarks, former NHL captain Andrew Ference who brings his environmental advocacy experience, Suncor Energy's VP of Sustainability Arlene Strom representing major industry perspectives, cleantech venture capital pioneer Nicholas Parker, and First Nations leader Melina Laboucan-Massimo from the Lubicon Cree First Nation. The event begins with a unique demonstration of the Newtonian Shift, an immersive role-playing board game that condenses decades of energy transition scenarios into an engaging learning experience. This showcase is particularly significant as it represents Alberta's strategic approach to energy transition - moving beyond polarized debates to find collaborative solutions that leverage the province's existing energy expertise while advancing low carbon technologies. The multi-stakeholder support from organizations ranging from Suncor Energy Foundation and Shell to the Government of Alberta and the Pembina Institute demonstrates the broad coalition forming around Alberta's energy future planning.
