Mind Over Metal Camp
A five-day welding camp for youth aged 12-14, sponsored by the Canadian Welding Association. Participants learn welding safety, procedures, and complete metalwork projects while building confidence and exploring trades careers.
The Mind Over Metal Camp provided 18 young participants with an intensive introduction to the welding trade through hands-on learning and professional mentorship. Under the guidance of three Red Seal certified College of the Rockies welding instructors - Tim Ross, Ken McKay, and Bruce Davis - students gained exposure to industry-standard welding safety protocols and techniques while creating various metalwork projects throughout the week. The program represents part of the Canadian Welding Association's national initiative to address skilled labor shortages by inspiring youth interest in trades careers. Since its inception in 2014, these camps have grown in popularity across Canada, offering students a risk-free opportunity to explore welding as a potential career path. The camp's comprehensive approach included not only technical instruction but also meals and social activities, culminating in a closing barbecue sponsored by Air Liquide that brought together participants, families, and industry representatives. This event exemplifies effective workforce development programming, combining practical skills training with confidence-building and career exploration in a supportive educational environment designed to address the growing demand for skilled tradespeople in Canada's industrial sectors.
