Mining Career Discovery Camp
A four-day intensive mining career exploration program designed for Grade 8 students in School District No. 27, Cariboo Chilcotin. The camp combines hands-on mining industry experience with educational components to inspire the next generation of mining professionals.
This innovative pilot program represents a groundbreaking approach to mining industry workforce development, specifically targeting Grade 8 students at a crucial decision-making point in their academic careers. The camp will be hosted at a forestry facility near local mines, providing an authentic industrial setting for learning. Students will participate in comprehensive mine site tours with a strong emphasis on safety protocols, including mock mine rescue demonstrations that highlight the industry's commitment to worker protection. The program includes practical training in GPS site mapping, exploration demonstration activities, and hands-on heavy equipment operation through demonstrations and simulations. Additional components focus on prospecting techniques and connecting mineral resources to everyday consumer products, helping students understand the mining industry's integral role in modern society. The camp is designed as a sustainable model that can be replicated across British Columbia and potentially other jurisdictions, with industry partners committed to continuing the program beyond initial government funding. This initiative directly addresses the mining sector's aging workforce challenges by engaging students early and providing them with the information needed to make informed course selections in high school that align with mining career pathways.
