Open Pit Mine Tours of Elkview Operations

Monday, July 1, 2019 August 31, 2019 Sparwood Visitor Centre, Sparwood, British Columbia

Public tours of the Elkview Coal Mine celebrating its 50th anniversary of surface operations. Tours provide a bird's-eye view of active mining operations including electric shovels, haul trucks, and daily mining activities. Tours run three times per week during July and August.

The Elkview Coal Mine tours offer a unique opportunity for the public to witness one of British Columbia's major steelmaking coal operations in action during its milestone 50th anniversary year. Starting from the Sparwood Visitor Centre, these guided tours take visitors up to the mine site where they can observe the impressive scale of open-pit mining operations. Participants will see electric shovels loading blasted material into massive haul trucks, watch these vehicles navigate steep switchbacks, and gain an appreciation for the complex logistics of modern coal mining.

The tours are particularly significant as they coincide with Elkview's celebration of five decades of surface mining operations, making this a historic moment for visitors to witness. The mine, which produces medium-volatile hard coking coal destined for steel production in Asia, represents one of the Elk Valley's five major steelmaking coal operations. With proven reserves lasting another 42 years and current production of 7 million tonnes annually, Elkview stands as a cornerstone of the regional economy.

For mining industry professionals and students, these tours provide valuable insights into large-scale open-pit operations, environmental reclamation practices, and the integration of mining activities within mountain communities. The timing during summer months ensures optimal weather conditions for viewing operations and understanding the challenges of mountain mining. Given Teck's recent recognition as the top company in Corporate Knights' Metals and Mining sustainability category, visitors will also observe firsthand the environmental practices that contribute to responsible mining operations.

The tours are managed by the Sparwood Chamber of Commerce, reflecting the strong community connection between the mining operation and local economic development. This partnership demonstrates how major mining operations can contribute to tourism and community engagement while maintaining their primary focus on resource extraction. For those interested in the intersection of industrial operations and community development, these tours offer an excellent case study in how mining companies can maintain positive relationships with their host communities.
