Student-Industry Mineral Exploration Workshop (S-IMEW)
A two-week intensive workshop for top post-secondary geoscience students hand-picked by universities across Canada. The program provides comprehensive exposure to mineral exploration industry practices with all expenses paid by industry sponsors.
S-IMEW represents one of the mining industry's most significant educational initiatives, bringing together the highest-performing geoscience students from universities nationwide for an immersive two-week experience. The workshop covers the full spectrum of mineral exploration disciplines including advanced exploration and mapping techniques, mineral deposits analysis, geophysics, geochemistry, regulatory frameworks, health and safety protocols, and corporate social responsibility practices. What sets S-IMEW apart from typical university programs is the caliber and diversity of industry expertise available daily, with specialists from every niche area of mineral exploration providing hands-on training and real-world insights. Students engage in both theoretical learning and practical field exercises, including geological mapping sessions led by experienced professionals like retired geologist Ben Berger. The program facilitates exceptional networking opportunities among Canada's top emerging geoscientists, creating professional relationships that often span entire careers. Many participants have gone on to successful careers with program sponsors like DGI Geoscience, while others have advanced rapidly enough to become industry decision-makers and clients. The workshop addresses the mining sector's critical demographic challenge, where retiring baby boomers are leaving significant knowledge gaps that these carefully selected and trained students are positioned to fill.
