Focus Graphite Initiates Joint Development with Forge Nano to Evaluate Advanced Coating Technology for Lac Knife Graphite

Focus Graphite Inc. has announced a strategic joint product development agreement with Forge Nano Inc., a leading U.S. semiconductor equipment and advanced materials company, to evaluate atomic layer deposition (ALD) coating technology on natural graphite from the company's Lac Knife project in Quebec. This collaboration represents a significant step toward developing higher-value graphite products for next-generation battery applications, particularly in the defence and industrial sectors where performance consistency and reliability are paramount.

The structured proof-of-concept program will involve processing approximately 2 kilograms of Lac Knife graphite under multiple coating conditions using Forge Nano's proprietary Atomic Armor ALD technology. The initiative is designed to generate comprehensive performance data targeting improved cycle life, fast charging performance, and material stability under demanding operating conditions. This approach addresses critical industry challenges as modern battery systems increasingly require operation under fast charging, repeated cycling, and variable temperature environments that can accelerate material degradation.

The strategic rationale for this partnership extends beyond immediate technical validation. Forge Nano brings a differentiated platform with its precision coating process that modifies materials at the atomic scale, potentially offering a viable alternative to conventional pitch coating methods that are energy intensive and dependent on fossil fuel inputs. Additionally, Forge Nano's subsidiary, Forge Battery, is advancing a 3 GWh per year U.S.-based lithium-ion manufacturing facility supported by over $100 million in Department of Energy funding, providing a direct pathway to North American supply chains for defence and mobility markets.

The program's outcomes are expected to support follow-on pilot-scale development programs, facilitate engagement with battery manufacturers and downstream partners, and strengthen applications for non-dilutive funding opportunities. This technical validation work complements Focus Graphite's existing $14.06 million funding agreement under NRCan's Global Partnerships Initiative for electro-thermal purification technology development. If successful, the results could position Lac Knife graphite for higher-performance applications within North American energy and defence supply chains, potentially commanding premium pricing in specialized market segments where advanced material properties are increasingly valued.
