FPX Nickel: Public Comment Period Opens for Baptiste Project

FPX Nickel Corp. has initiated the first public comment period for the Baptiste Nickel Project's environmental assessment process, marking a significant regulatory milestone for the central British Columbia project. The comment period, running through March 9, 2026, is being conducted jointly by the BC Environmental Assessment Office and the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada, following the acceptance of the Initial Project Description by both federal and provincial governments in January 2026.

The Baptiste project represents a substantial greenfield nickel discovery featuring awaruite (Ni3Fe), a unique sulphur-free nickel-iron mineral hosted in an ultramafic/ophiolite complex covering 453 km² of mineral claims. The absence of sulphur combined with access to the BC Hydro grid positions Baptiste to potentially become one of the world's lowest carbon-intensive nickel producers, capable of producing high-grade product without intermediate smelting or complex refining requirements. The project has attracted significant attention, with approximately US$55 million invested in exploration and development since 2010.

The regulatory advancement comes as the project benefits from British Columbia's Critical Minerals Office concierge service initiative, making it the first project included in this provincial strategy to prioritize critical minerals development. This framework provides structured support for proactively addressing issues and opportunities ahead of the environmental assessment process. Beyond the main Baptiste deposit, awaruite mineralization has been confirmed through drilling at several target areas within the claims package, most notably at the Van Target located 6 km north of the primary deposit.

The environmental assessment process represents a comprehensive regulatory pathway that includes four distinct public comment periods, demonstrating the thorough evaluation required for projects of this scale and strategic importance. For the nickel sector, Baptiste's unique characteristics and regulatory progress represent a significant development in the critical minerals supply chain, particularly given the increasing global demand for low-carbon nickel production to support the energy transition.
