The Darlington Nuclear Generating Station power reactor operating licence is valid until Dec. 31, 2015.

OPG has submitted an application to renew the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station power reactor operating licence to 2028. This licence term would cover the time required to complete the refurbishment of all four Darlington reactor units. It would also be the first step in a new licensing framework being developed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), one that allows longer term licences - consistent with international practice.

The CNSC has announced the dates and locations for the relicensing hearing, and relevant information has been posted to the CNSC website.

OPG is confident we have met CNSC’s requirements for the Darlington licence renewal. We have demonstrated that we have the managed systems in place to safely operate the station while undertaking refurbishment.

The first part of the hearing was held in Ottawa on Aug. 19, with the remainder taking place Nov. 2, 3, 4 and 5 at the Hope Fellowship Church, 1685 Bloor Street, in Courtice, Ontario. Members of the public are invited to provide comments to the Secretary of the Commission by Sept. 28, 2015.

The CNSC also held an information session for those interested in hearing more about how Canada’s nuclear regulator ensures that nuclear activities and facilities are safe, and to learn more about participating in the hearing and the licensing process. The session was held on Sept. 15 from 2-4 p.m. at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex in Bowmanville.

On this page (http://www.opg.com/generating-power/nuclear/stations/darlington-nuclear/Pages/Darlington-Nuclear-Licence-Renewal.aspx) you can find information about the hearing and relevant documents in support of OPG’s reactor operating licence renewal application including:

  • OPG submissions related to Nuclear Power Plant operation;
  • OPG submissions related to the Renewal of Darlington’s operating licence; and
  • Materials related to Refurbishment (e.g., RD-360, decisions (EA approval), correspondence, responses, etc.)

OPG is confident we have met CNSC’s requirements for the Darlington licence renewal. We have demonstrated that we have the managed systems in place to safely operate the station while undertaking refurbishment.
