Sustainability distinctions for Canadian mining

As an investment specialist focused on sustainability, RobecoSAM was formed in 1995 from the belief that corporate sustainability grows a company’s ability to succeed. It now names sustainability leaders in a number of industries, as well as “yearbook members.”

The Sustainability Yearbook provides an overview of the results of our annual Corporate Sustainability Assessment and highlights key trends shaping each of the 59 analyzed industries. The top scoring company in each industry is named the RobecoSAM Industry Leader, and companies listed in the Yearbook are classified into three categories: RobecoSAM Gold Class, RobecoSAM Silver Class and RobecoSAM Bronze Class.

Criteria for a RobecoSAM sustainability award is based on economic, environmental and social dimensions.

In the mining and metals section for 2014, a U.K. company, Anglo American PLC, is the industry leader. Canada’s Teck Resources Ltd. achieved a silver on the list and another Canadian company, Barrick Gold Corp, received bronze. A further seven industry members made RobecoSAM’s Sustainability Yearbook including two other Canadian countries, Goldcorp Inc. and Kinross Gold Corp.

These sustainability awards represent companies that are healthy overall. Particularly in the area of resource extraction, companies face increasing challenges. Mining and Exploration congratulates these Canadian companies for being leaders in sustainability.
