The company specializes in designing and manufacturing steel wheels and rims for mining, forestry and industrial equipment, serving markets worldwide including Indonesia, Chile, South Africa and Australia.
Let the good times roll
A.J. Forsyth, a division of Russel Metals Inc., has seen its Prince George branch transition from primarily serving forestry to having 50% of business tied to mining companies and suppliers. Company manager Kevin McCormick expects a 5-10 year building boom in northern B.C. with 27 new mines in various development stages.
Near-infrared technology essential for rapid and accurate mineral sampling
ASD Inc. released its TerraSpec 4 line of mineral analyzers that use near-infrared spectroscopy to provide rapid and accurate mineral sampling, enabling analysis of over 1,000 blast hole chip samples per day. The technology dramatically improves on traditional laboratory tests by delivering results in seconds rather than hours, helping optimize mining operations from exploration through production.
Warming vest keeps the chill out
Ergodyne has introduced the N-Ferno 6900 warming vest featuring NobleTek insulation and argon gas chambers for workers in cold environments. The vest allows users to adjust warmth levels with a dial and offers equivalent thermal protection to 14mm of traditional insulation materials.
New product reduces downtime
Hallen Specialties has developed a patented belt conveyor idler replacement bracket that allows mining companies to repair damaged conveyor systems in 20 minutes instead of replacing entire frames. The new product reduces both downtime and costs for mining operations by providing a quick-fix solution for failed center supports.
Rugged mining robots can go where no man has gone before
Inuktun Services Ltd., a Nanaimo-based robotics company, is developing remotely operated vehicles for mining applications including borehole inspection, flooded mine assessment, and hazardous environment operations. The company is addressing mining industry adoption challenges through flexible rental and lease options, with systems ranging from $9,000/week rentals to $200,000 purchases.
Compact wood waste grinder
Rayco Manufacturing is introducing its RH1754 compact horizontal grinder to the mining industry, adapting forestry equipment for on-site wood waste processing. The portable 140 HP diesel-powered unit allows small-scale mining operations to economically process wood waste materials including lumber scraps, pallets, and construction debris into saleable mulch products.
Secondary containment system
Westeel promotes its C-Ring Secondary Containment Systems, which are engineered for industrial storage applications. The modular systems feature high-strength steel construction with galvanizing and can be adjusted in size after installation without ground disturbance.
Durable earth movers
Caterpillar Inc. is expanding its mining equipment portfolio following its acquisition of Bucyrus International, introducing new heavy-duty excavators, rope shovels, and draglines designed for large-scale mining operations. The new equipment line includes the 7495 rope shovel with 109-tonne payload capacity and the 6050 hydraulic shovel with over four million operation hours capability.
Diamond core drill bit
Canadian drilling equipment manufacturer Fordia has launched the Hero 11 diamond core bit, specifically designed for very hard to extremely hard ground conditions including basalt, felsic, and volcanic rock. The new bit features 13-millimetre diamond impregnation height and targets challenging drilling conditions commonly found in South America and Australia.
Gear reducer
Dodge has launched the Torque-Arm II Shaft Mount Reducer, a helical speed reducer for mining conveyor systems offering increased power ratings up to 400 HP and torque capacity up to 500,000 lb. in. The product features extended gear centres and specialized tooth geometry for enhanced durability in surface operations and in-pit crusher applications.
Getting the skills to succeed
O'Brien Training in Prince George, B.C. has achieved Industry Training Authority designation for heavy equipment operator training, with graduates earning Red Seal certification. The school offers practical, hands-on training for mining, oil and gas sectors with strong job placement prospects across Canada.
System tracking software
Design Maintenance Systems Inc. (DMSI) offers MAINTelligence InspectCE, a PDA-based inspection tracking software for mining and smelting operations. The system streamlines maintenance practices by capturing asset condition data and providing early problem detection through automated alerts and workflow integration.
Think inside the box
Saskatchewan-based 3twenty Solutions secured $120,000 in investment from Dragons' Den for their innovative shipping container conversion business targeting remote mining camps. Claude Resources Inc. became their first mining client, purchasing a container camp in late 2010.
