BC Mining Week 2013

Wednesday, May 1, 2013 May 7, 2013 British Columbia, Canada

BC Mining Week 2013 featured the "Mining Builds Communities" campaign to raise awareness about the broad economic impact of mining operations across British Columbia. The week-long event included activities in communities throughout the province to demonstrate how mining creates jobs and economic benefits beyond direct employment.

BC Mining Week 2013 represented a coordinated provincial effort to showcase the mining industry's comprehensive economic contribution to British Columbia communities. The event was anchored by the Mining Suppliers Association of B.C.'s "Mining Builds Communities" campaign, which aimed to educate the public about the industry's far-reaching economic multiplier effects. Throughout the week, events were held in communities across the province, with participation from major mining suppliers like SMS Equipment and other industry companies.

The campaign emphasized key statistics demonstrating mining's economic impact, including the fact that for every direct mining job, two additional positions are created in related services and support industries. With over 900 service and supply companies supporting more than 1,200 mineral exploration and mining operations across B.C., the week highlighted the interconnected nature of the mining ecosystem. Events showcased real-world examples like the Copper Mountain Mine, which sources services from companies spanning Vancouver to Williams Lake, illustrating the geographic spread of mining's economic benefits.

Attendees and participants gained insights into mining's role as a cornerstone industry in B.C., contributing 4.5% of provincial GDP and supporting over 37,000 direct and indirect jobs. The week also emphasized mining's social contributions, including charitable efforts like the Mining for Miracles campaign that raised over $20 million for BC Children's Hospital. For industry professionals, government officials, and community leaders, BC Mining Week 2013 provided a comprehensive platform to understand and communicate mining's essential role in British Columbia's economic fabric and its importance in supporting communities throughout the province.
