Minister’s tour to strengthen B.C. – Alaska relations on mining and environment

Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett is travelling through Alaska this week, where he will meet with state officials, Alaska Natives and representatives from other interests including commercial fishing, tourism and environmental groups to strengthen relationships and discuss ways B.C. and Alaska can work together to ensure the protection, conservation and enhancement of the shared environment.

In Alaska, Bennett and senior officials from the ministries of energy and mines, and environment will meet with state officials to continue working toward an agreement that will allow for more collaboration on proposed mine developments in both jurisdictions.

Currently, when there are trans-boundary issues with a proposed mine in British Columbia, U.S. state and federal agencies are invited to participate in the environmental assessment and permitting processes. The State of Alaska has been involved in the authorization process for B.C. mines including the Tulsequah Chief, Galore Creek, KSM, Red Chris and Brucejack.

Alaska will also be able to participate in the permitting process for the KSM project as part of the KSM Mine Review Committee once it is established.
