Teck Trail operations completes $35 million investment to improve community air quality

Teck Trail Operations has completed construction on the Smelter Recycle Building, a $35-million investment that will reduce fugitive dust emissions by up to 25%, improving community air quality. The building now contains concentrate and in-process materials previously stored outside. These materials will be stored, mixed and loaded into trucks within the building, to ensure all dust is captured and recycled into our processes.

“This project is a key milestone in our fugitive dust reduction program, and shows ongoing commitment to working with the local community to improve air quality,” says Thompson Hickey, General Manager. “Reducing fugitive dust provides the greatest opportunity to continue reducing community ambient metal levels.”

Construction of the building took just over one year, starting in the summer of 2015. The project involved approximately 123,000 construction hours to complete, which equates to 60 full time jobs per year.
