Conifex Timber launches biomass power plant
Conifex Timber Inc. commissioned a 36-megawatt biomass power plant in Mackenzie, B.C. that converts sawmill residuals into renewable electricity for over 20,000 homes. The plant provides revenue diversification for the forestry company while solving waste disposal issues by converting 172,000 tons of sawmill residuals annually into valuable fuel.

Waneta expansion celebrates grand opening & workers who made it happen
The Waneta Expansion Limited Partnership celebrated the grand opening of its $900 million, 335 MW hydroelectric expansion project near Trail, BC. The project was completed within budget and six weeks ahead of schedule, employing over 1,400 people and injecting over $300 million into the local economy. The expansion adds clean renewable power generation capacity by utilizing water that would otherwise be spilled from the existing Waneta Dam.
Canpotex selects National Steel Car to manufacture 700 railcars for potash shipments
Canpotex has selected National Steel Car to manufacture 700 new potash railcars in a $70 million investment that will provide employment for over 400 people for seven months. The custom-designed railcars will transport Saskatchewan potash to coastal ports, continuing a 20-year partnership that has produced over 7,000 railcars since 1999.

Teck among final bidders for $2B Chilean copper mine
Barrick Gold Corp. is seeking a buyer for a 50% stake in its Zaldivar copper mine in Chile, with the asset potentially valued at over $2 billion. BHP Billiton and Teck Resources are among the final bidders, with some parties interested in acquiring the entire mine and a decision expected in July.

FortisBC operates LNG facilities in British Columbia including the Tilbury plant in Delta (since 1970) and Mt. Hayes on Vancouver Island, storing 2.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas as backup supply. The company is planning expansion of the Tilbury facility to serve growing domestic LNG demand, particularly for transportation applications where LNG costs 50-60% less than diesel.
Woodfibre LNG is breaking environmental ground
Woodfibre LNG is advancing its 2.1 million tonne annual LNG export facility in Squamish, BC, with environmental assessment completion expected by July. The project features an innovative environmental platform including 80% lower greenhouse gas emissions and extensive site remediation of a 100-year-old industrial site.
Dave Coles joins Advisory Board of Pacific Future Energy
Pacific Future Energy Corporation announced that Dave Coles, President Emeritus of Unifor, has joined its advisory board. Coles brings extensive experience from the Alberta energy industry to help advance PFEC's planned refinery project on the BC coast. The company aims to build what it calls the world's greenest oil refinery in partnership with First Nations to process Canadian bitumen for Asian markets.
