Elk Valley Water Quality Plan Public Consultation - Fernie

Monday, April 22, 2024 Fernie Seniors Drop-in Centre, Fernie, British Columbia Free

Community open house for public input on Teck's Elk Valley Water Quality Plan. The session includes presentation and discussion on aquatic health, water quality approaches, and community communication preferences.

This open house represents a critical opportunity for Fernie community members to directly influence Teck Coal's comprehensive water quality planning for the Elk Valley watershed. Running from 5-8 p.m. with formal presentation and discussion beginning at 6 p.m., the session will focus on three key areas: current aquatic health conditions, short- medium- and long-term strategies for addressing water quality concerns, and preferred methods for ongoing community updates once the plan is implemented. The consultation is part of Teck's collaborative approach with communities, First Nations, and government bodies to develop a plan that maintains watershed health while ensuring sustainable mining operations. Community input gathered during these sessions will be integrated with technical and socioeconomic data before the final plan is submitted to the B.C. Ministry of Environment for approval. This represents a significant opportunity for local residents to shape environmental management practices that will affect their community for years to come, particularly given the Elk Valley's importance as both an ecological watershed and economic mining region.
