Mount Milligan is a large open-pit copper-gold mine in central B.C. that commenced commercial production in 2014. The operation processes approximately 60,000 tonnes per day. A persistent challenge has been securing sufficient water supply, addressed through a pipeline from nearby Philip Lake.

2025–2026 Update

Centerra is evaluating options to extend the mine life beyond 2033 through exploration of additional deposits near the current pit. The operation has stabilized throughput after water-supply challenges in earlier years.

Region

Steelmaking Coal

British Columbia's southeastern corner hosts one of the largest metallurgical coal complexes on Earth. Steelmaking coal remains the province's top mineral export by value, shipped to steel mills across Asia and Europe via rail and port facilities on the Pacific coast.

The Elk Valley complex is one of the largest steelmaking coal operations on Earth, comprising four active mines — Fording River, Elkview, Greenhills, and Line Creek — plus Coal Mountain on care and maintenance. Glencore acquired a 77% stake in 2024 from Teck Resources, transforming EVR into a pure-play metallurgical coal company. The operation employs over 4,500 workers and ships product via rail to Westshore Terminals in Delta, B.C.

2025–2026 Update

Glencore has submitted a revised proposal for the Fording River Extension Project, which would extend mining at the site into the early 2070s. Selenium water treatment remains a significant environmental commitment, with EVR investing over $1 billion in water treatment infrastructure.

Molybdenum 0 (C&M since 2015)

Endako is one of the world's largest primary molybdenum mines, located near Fraser Lake in central B.C. The mine was placed on care and maintenance in 2015 due to depressed molybdenum prices. At full capacity, the operation processed 28,000 tonnes per day.

2025–2026 Update

Centerra monitors molybdenum prices for potential restart economics. A restart would require sustained molybdenum prices above US$20/lb. Environmental monitoring and water treatment continue at the site.

Industry Outlook

B.C.'s Mining Future

British Columbia sits at the intersection of surging global mineral demand and heightened environmental and social expectations. The province's mining future will be shaped by four defining forces.

Copper Demand

B.C. is positioned to benefit enormously from the global energy transition. Copper demand for EVs, renewables, and data centres is projected to double by 2035, and the province holds some of Canada's largest deposits.

Critical Minerals Strategy

The B.C. government's 2024 Critical Minerals Strategy identifies 15 priority minerals. Provincial permitting reform aims to cut mine approval timelines while maintaining environmental standards.

Environmental Scrutiny

The Elk Valley selenium issue, tailings management concerns, and Indigenous rights obligations are reshaping how mines are designed and operated. Water treatment costs alone exceed $1 billion across the industry.

Indigenous Partnership

Modern mining in B.C. increasingly operates under impact benefit agreements with First Nations. Tahltan, Tŝilhqot'in, and Stk'emlupsemc nations are setting new standards for revenue-sharing and environmental co-governance.

About This Guide

This guide profiles 12 of British Columbia's most significant mining operations across copper-gold, steelmaking coal, precious metals, and critical minerals. Data is current as of March 2026 and is drawn from public company disclosures, provincial mining reports, and regulatory filings.

Endako Mine is included despite being on care and maintenance since 2015 because it remains one of the world's largest primary molybdenum deposits and could return to production if commodity prices recover. Several advanced exploration projects — including Seabridge Gold's KSM and Galore Creek (Newmont/Teck JV) — are not yet in production and are therefore excluded.
