Minds Over Metal Welding Summer Camp
A five-day welding camp for at-risk youth aged 12-15, providing hands-on introduction to welding trades and career opportunities. The program includes safety training, equipment use, and project creation in a supervised professional environment.
The Minds Over Metal summer camp represents a comprehensive introduction to the welding profession designed specifically for young people who may benefit from exposure to skilled trades career paths. Participants will engage in a structured curriculum covering welding safety fundamentals, Gas Metal Arc welding techniques, and weld symbol interpretation, providing them with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The program emphasizes hands-on learning, beginning with welding simulator training before progressing to actual welding equipment where students create their own projects under professional supervision.
The camp addresses multiple objectives beyond basic skills training, serving as a youth engagement initiative for at-risk populations while simultaneously introducing participants to the diverse career opportunities within the welding industry. Students learn about various professional pathways including welding inspection, research, and engineering roles, broadening their understanding of how technical skills can lead to advanced career opportunities. The program also includes educational components on the historical and contemporary impact of welding on daily life and industrial applications.
This intensive five-day experience is fully funded by the Canadian Welding Association Foundation, eliminating financial barriers and including daily meals to ensure all participants can fully engage with the program. The initiative reflects broader industry recognition of the need to attract young talent to address skilled trades shortages while providing meaningful opportunities for youth development. The camp's success at College of the Rockies contributes to a national network of over 35 similar programs being delivered across Canada, demonstrating the scalability and effectiveness of this workforce development model.
