Mining Week - Teck Elk Valley Coal Operations Tours
Week-long series of free guided tours of Teck's five major coal operations in the Elk Valley, including Fording River, Line Creek, Coal Mountain, Elkview, and Greenhills operations. Tours provide rare public access to active mining sites with transportation provided from multiple regional pickup points.
Mining Week represents an exceptional opportunity for the public to gain firsthand insight into one of Canada's most significant coal mining regions. Teck Coal, in partnership with the Sparwood Chamber of Commerce, is opening the doors to all five of its Elk Valley operations, providing guided tours that showcase the scale and complexity of modern metallurgical coal mining. The week-long program runs from Sunday, May 11th through Saturday, May 17th, with each day featuring tours of different operations including some of Canada's largest coal mines. Transportation logistics have been carefully coordinated with bus pickups from Fernie Chamber of Commerce and Blairmore Mall at 9:30 AM, connecting at Sparwood Chamber of Commerce to gather local participants before departing at 10:30 AM to the designated mining site. Elkford participants have separate pickup arrangements at 11:00 AM from the Elkford Visitor Center for tours on May 12th and 16th. This level of public access to active mining operations is relatively rare in the industry, making this an invaluable educational and networking opportunity for anyone interested in understanding modern coal mining operations, from students and local residents to industry professionals and potential investors. Registration is required through the Sparwood Chamber of Commerce at 250-425-2423, emphasizing the organized nature of this community outreach initiative.
