Project Heavy Duty Equipment Training

Project Heavy Duty represents a flagship workforce development initiative now in its third year, specifically designed to bridge the skills gap in British Columbia's Elk Valley mining region. This comprehensive two-day training program provides 24 high school students with direct, hands-on experience operating the same heavy equipment they would encounter in local coal mining operations, including machinery from industry leaders like Teck Coal and SMS Equipment.

The program structure demonstrates sophisticated industry-education collaboration, beginning with Level I First Aid certification from College of the Rockies in April, followed by guided tours of active mining facilities including Teck Coal's Line Creek Mine. Students also receive WorkSafeBC safety training, ensuring they understand the critical importance of workplace safety protocols that govern mining operations throughout British Columbia.

What sets this program apart is its practical, experiential approach to career exploration. Rather than classroom-based learning, students work directly with veteran equipment operators who volunteer their expertise, creating mentorship opportunities while demonstrating real-world applications of heavy industry skills.
