World Uranium Symposium

Tuesday, April 14, 2015 April 16, 2015 Centre des congrès de Québec, Quebec City, Quebec

The first World Uranium Symposium held in Quebec brings together over 100 international specialists to examine critical issues across the nuclear fuel chain. Medical professionals, policy experts, and civil society leaders will address economic, safety, environmental, and human rights aspects of the nuclear industry.

The World Uranium Symposium represents a landmark gathering of international expertise on nuclear industry challenges, bringing together medical professionals, policy specialists, environmental advocates, and indigenous rights experts for three days of intensive discussions. Attendees will explore fundamental questions about the future of nuclear energy in a post-Fukushima world, where rising costs and safety concerns have prompted global reassessment of nuclear commitments despite the technology's role in generating 11% of world electricity.

The symposium features distinguished speakers including Helen Mary Caldicott, cofounder of Physicians for Social Responsibility; Arnie Gundersen, international nuclear safety expert and former industry executive; Mycle Schneider, author of the annual World Nuclear Industry Status Report; and representatives from affected communities including Sara Olsvig from Greenland and Doug Brugge, who has studied uranium mining impacts on Navajo communities. These experts will address critical policy questions around nuclear weapons proliferation, radioactive waste management, international protection standards, and indigenous peoples' rights.

The timing is particularly significant as it coincides with the 70th anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, ongoing UN Non-Proliferation Treaty negotiations, and preparations for the Paris climate agreement. Canada's hosting of this symposium underscores its complex relationship with the nuclear sector as a leading uranium producer facing domestic challenges, including Quebec's recent reactor shutdown and pending environmental review of uranium mining. The event aims to produce concrete policy recommendations for enhanced protection of health, safety, and environment.

For industry professionals, policymakers, and civil society representatives, this symposium offers rare access to leading international experts and comprehensive analysis of nuclear industry trends. The interdisciplinary approach, combining medical, environmental, economic, and human rights perspectives, provides valuable insights for anyone involved in energy policy, mining regulation, environmental protection, or public health planning in the nuclear sector.
