The Friday Dispatch

Good morning.

Happy Friday everyone, the work week is nearly over - now for the fun part, Saturday Morning Cartoons, Sugary Breakfast Cereals and a day at the beach.

Have you been following FIFA? As you know, Hockey is my family’s game, but holy heck if they haven’t made FIFA fun to follow this year.

Canada is in with a chance! If you’re in Vancouver and have a chance to go, do it. We have a Canadian team right now who can compete.

And this is the huge part, 21 of the 26 players on the World Cup team this year were born in Canada. An investment made 20 years ago is now paying dividends. 

In 2007 (yes, that was almost 20 years ago… ) the Vancouver Whitecaps started the Whitecaps Academy and sent coaches all across Canada to run regional programs. This was a fully funded program, these kids had access to top tier talent when they needed it most.

For years Canada hasn’t been a force in international Football and when we had decent years it was through importing talent.

Now we’re seeing kids that grew up playing in leagues and programs who showed them what it was like to believe in their future, regardless of where they’re from, and chase something better for themselves.

21 of 26 were born in Canada and we’re in with a chance!

Long bets are not always made in the markets, sometimes the best bet you can make is on that summer student or that kid you see picking balls at the course on weekends. You all run real companies who do real things, give that kid a job this summer that gives them a leg up and a shot at something bigger.

Believe in someone, bet your own money and time on a human, who’s future is entirely unknown to anyone ,and steward them the best you can. For you it’s not a forever hire, for them it might just be the summer that shapes their lives in ways you could never imagine.

Here’s to Long Bets and the Summer Jobs worth remembering for a lifetime.

I’m taking the kids into Toronto to check out FIFA events - loads of free activities to take in. One of the kids just wrapped up their finals and it’s looking like a great time to hit the train.
